April 18,2008

My son is now sick. Sigh. So we are both home and resting. We were having a grand debate- when do you decide to let your body rest, allowing it to get better faster and when you decide to do a little cardio to loosen stuff up to get better faster. We decided everybody had to decide for themselves….

Cycle - 0.8 hours - 4/17/2008

The weather was really nice, so Alex asked if I would go on a bike ride with him. He knew I was a bit under the weather, so we just went for a leasurely ride. The conversations we have….Also, neither of us grabbed a water bottle. Personal management learned the hard way. Then we went for a little walk and ran into Tess and Frankie (neighborhood dogs), so life was good for the boy.

Sigh- feeling a bit cranky and tight. I really am not very good at being sick…hopefully I will feel better after I get going. Well, I have to go wake up the beastie boy. Hoping everyone has a great day.

April 16, 2008

Sigh, I went to the doc’s today for my regular thyroid check, and I mentioned to him that I woke up with a head ache. So he checked out my sinuses, sigh. It turns out I have a sinus and throat infection. Sigh. So, I was thinking of taking today and tomorrow off, starting ack with a gentle cardio on Friday….

I had two people recommend the Total Immersion. I am curious to know ( I read the articles, but have not had a chance to read the book) if this is something you can teach yourself or if you really need to get some training. The articles definatley made me think and realize that I did have a not so great relationship with the water…although I got my face in, which for me is a miracle.

April 15, 2008

OK- the thought that I might be a little crazy kept going through my mind when I woke up at 4:27 a.m. to get to the swim practice at 5:00 a.m. It got louder when I stepped outside and realized it was a weeeee bit brisk outside. I was not sure what that was going to mean for the water temperature. We looked like a bunch of chickens covered in goosebumps prior to jumping in. Giggle- no one wanted to go in first. Wouldn’t cha know it- it was definitely warmer in the water than outside.

We worked on breast stroke today. It was rather amusing, as I have never done it before. The coach was very patient, and in the end, it was somewhat successful. It was good to do the drills she was having us do, because it really helped me be aware of where my body is and what it is doing. My freestyle has improved immensely. There is a glimmer of hope.

Question- the first two days the coach had me wear fins- today she had me keep them off. What a difference. I was wondering- is there an advantage of training with fins? I understand starting out, so use it as an aide, allowing you to at least try the strokes without being totally exhausted. But…you don’t compete with them on……is it helping or potentially hindering your training?

I will read the suggested articles this afternoon- I’ll have some time to invest while I am waiting for Alex’s swim practice to finish. By the way, proud Mom that I am, the boy was moved up a level in swim practice. The practice time changed from 1 hour to 1 and 1/2 hours, plus there was significantly less breaks between swims. The boy slept well last night.

Continuing onward!

Cycle - 0.9 hours - 04/14/2008

Ok- I went on a 12 mile bike ride, but when I was 1/3 of the way through it I ran into Cerrie…blush. I stopped and chatted for about 10 minutes, but I forgot to stop my watch. So actually, I have no idea how long we chatted. I am using a mountain bike- it is what I have. I wanted to get my heart rate up, so I used the highest gear (21). I was doing ok, but I had to really work when I went into the wind.

April 14, 2008

I actually got a response! Very exciting.  My son Alex is interested in doing the Disney Triathlon in September, so he asked me to start waking him up early before school to start to run. He makes me laugh, because he is sooo cranking waking up, but by the time we are done, he is a regular chatterbug. He was pleased with himself- for the last couple of weeks, the  ‘fat old lady’ has been out running him and she had to be the cheerleader. Today, he totally dusted me- showed no mercy. And he was really really enjoying the fact. Good for him…but he better be careful, ’cause she is not known for speed, but endurance…hee hee heee..

I did 12 miles bikingtoday, but I ran into Cerrie- who is the one who had the bright idea of training for a tri. She is running in the Tennessee marathon in a few days. I don’t have a clear idea what my time was because I never stopped my watch. Sigh, can’t get good trainees anywhere these days. I was able to do the distance comfortably.

A huge challenge for my training is the fact that I really don’t know how to swim. I can get to one side of the pool to the other, but with no style. I created a new word- troddling. Trying to swim without a clue. I have signed up with a master swim team, but I can only make the Tuesday and Thursday 5 a.m. practices. I have only been to two practices, but I am proud of myself. I have been able to get my head down. Cool. Now, if I can only get the breathing rhythm correct so I am not popping brain cells from the lack of oxygen.

So, I have been trying to come up with some sort of plan that would accomodate those practices. I am going forward, with really no plan other than to slowly make the distances. Once that is accomplished and I was thinking on trying to increase the speeds. I would love some guidance in this matter, and I truly appreciate the offer of assistance.

Jog With Alex

Went jogging with Alex this morning- he was cranky waking up, but when it came to the run, he totally dusted me. I tried to pick up the pace, but my shins were bothering me. Is it because I am jiggling my wiggling bits about or do I need new sneakers???
